SGVCC YouthBuild earns first place!

SGVCC youth at the 2012 BIEC Design/Build Competition

Over this last weekend, April 14th and 15th, the San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps’ YouthBuild participants competed in the 2012 Annual BIEC Design/Build Competition. The event, which is held every year at the Orange County Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa, had over 20 teams vying for the top spot in three categories in both the design and build competition. Youth were expected to design and build a garden house structure over the span of two days, with judging taking place on the final day, Sunday. Teams were judged based on the following criteria: teamwork, workmanship, safety, ability to work with building officials and completion of structure. SGVCC’s team had been training in carpentry the whole week prior to this years event and looked forward to showcasing their skills.
On Saturday the SGVCC YouthBuilders were off to a great start, taking an early lead in the YouthBuild category. By the end of day one, their unit had the floor, walls and ceiling built. But the long work day and the warm sun took a toll on most participants. By Sunday morning, day two, the team was still reeling from day one and progress resumed at a much slower pace. By mid day, other area YouthBuild teams had caught and passed the team, completing their roof structures and beginning their finish carpentry. SGVCC’s team were about to complete their roof structure when the horn was sounded and all work was to be stopped for judging.
After judging was concluded and all scores tallied, the time came for the award ceremony. There would be winners in three categories: High school, Trade Tech and YouthBuild. A fourth category would be for design. Awards were given in the YouthBuild category to South LA YouthBuild for third place and San Fernando/Antelope Valley YouthBuild received second.
SGVCC YouthBuild earned first place in the end, scoring higher in quality in workmanship, teamwork and safety than the other teams.
The team worked extremely hard in training and gave everything they had the last day, to pull out the win. To say that we are proud of our youth, is an understatement!
GOOD JOB TEAM!!!!! Congratulations to SGVCC Team Members: Joseph Hernandez, Delino Garcia, Joe Garcia, Brenda Hernandez, Joanna Hernandez, Juan Lopez, Brandon Esquivel, Joseph Loreto, John Paul Ruiz, Victor Zarate
